Toe to Toe

Meet Marty Loudder– associate dean and professor at Texas A&M. With the help of Chris Taylor, of Fishheads of the San Juan, Marty has overcome the difficulties of her physical limitations due to childhood Polio so that she can enjoy time on the water with her family. This incredible story of determination and perseverance is an inspiration for us all to never let anything deter us from following our passions. Marty has some amazing techniques that enable her to fly fish confidently and successfully. Seeing the whole family light up with joy is proof positive that there is so much more to fly fishing than catching a few fish.

Bromley running through a field.

BROMLEY

Bromley is an integral part of the Galloway family, and he's the perfect playmate for two energetic young boys. When a terrible accident leaves the dog injured and everyone unsure of what the future holds, they fear the worst. But Bromley's resilience and zest for life brings them all back to their "happy place," demonstrating once again how the love of a dog--and a dog's love--can bind a family together.

For the Love of Luck

Some dogs are special — the way they soldier through the ups and downs, bring tail-thumping optimism to our day, how they make us better people. As Nancy Mackinnon describes, “It’s an amazing experience to go through a lifetime with a dog.”

Una Razón Para Pescar (A Reason to Fish)

Dan Diez loves to fish. It's the reason why he spends many long nights under bridges in Miami fly fishing out of a canoe for giant tarpon. On the surface, his passion flows from the thrills and wonder of a heart-pounding experience with rod and fly that connects him intimately with the natural world. However, at a deeper level, the passion is rooted in a story—a story about Dan and his grandfather—that involves traditions born in Cuba, political imprisonment, the search for a new home, and a relationship with water that symbolizes a freedom often taken for granted.

The Motivator

Filmmaker Aaron Hitchins turns his camera on the person who has motivated him to lead a life connected to the outdoors: his mother, Maureen. He wishes he were half as active as she is, and her commitment to rediscovering herself is inspirational.

Simon Perkins with his dog Copa.

Copa

In her 14 years, Copa has been by the side of Orvis President Simon Perkins through myriad changes—Montana guide life, a move to Vermont, marriage, children, and more. She has been a constant source of love and companionship, and as she nears the end of her life, Simon reflects on how much their relationship has meant to him. In the fall of 2020, he wanted to give her a chance to return to the Montana prairies of her youth one last time, to run through the prairie in search of sharp-tailed grouse.

When the lights go down at Fenway, former Boston Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello heads for a place where he's no longer the center of attention - to a place that centers him the most.

For wingshooting guide Steve Grossman, the hunt is about so much more than shooting a limit of birds. Ever since he was a teenager, he has devoted himself to chasing wild birds and training dogs.

90 and Counting

Father & fisherman, hunter & grandfather, businessman & conservationist. Even at 90 years young, Leigh Perkins led a life in the field like few others. But for him, the most important thing was sharing his passions with the ones he loves. He passed away in May 2021, at the age of 93. Save Bristol Bay

Tens of millions of sockeye salmon swim up the rivers of Bristol Bay every year, the world's largest sockeye salmon run on Earth. The $1.5 billion salmon industry in Bristol Bay supports 14,000 jobs in commercial fishing, sport fishing, and tourism. Pebble Mine would put this industry and a way of life at risk, while destroying over 15 square miles of natural habitat...and that's only the beginning.

Uplander

“When you first get into bird hunting it's all about getting the bird. Then you start enjoying the habitat and scenery, how the dogs are working. Then it’s the sharing with other people. That's when it all comes together.” - Dave Perkins of ORVIS
